About the Studio
Mimi and Tom bring to the teaching experience a rich and diverse knowledge of traditional European violin training.Mimi has extensive training and experience in the Suzuki approach which is specially tailored for beginning students, while Tom has a thorough understanding of the jazz idiom and improvisation.
Together, we tailor a course of study to meet the needs of the individual student.
In the beginning we focus on the basics of posture and bow hold - trying to create a solid foundation on which to build. At the same time we help parents to provide a nurturing musical environment at home.
We strive to develop the "Suzuki Triangle" which is the 3-way realtionship between student, teacher and parent. We provide support for parents and students for the week's practice by creating clear and attainable goals at each lesson. Beginners have the added benefit of participating in group lessons where we reinforce techniques learned in the private lesson. The beginning student has an opportunity to hear more advanced students which serves as a good motivator for both students. Advanced students in turn encourage younger students.
Group lessons give the added benefit of learning 'stage presence' early in a students development. As students progress we encourage more refinement in technical proficiency and a more thorough study of the great repertoire written for the violin.
All full-time students will have the opportunity to perform in an annual recital. Friends and family are encouraged to attend.
As students develop, we encourage them to follow their musical passion towards either playing in a chamber ensemble i.e. string quartet, orchestra or band, playing classical, jazz, rock, country, Celtic, or bluegrass.

We have an open door teaching policy which means all students are encouraged to listen (quietly) to other students lessons. In other words, come early or stay late, there is always something to be learned.
Through the formal study of music and violin we hope to help all students develop their musical abilities to their highest potential.
